Demag V-type crane nominated for German Design Award 2016
- Nomination in the Industry category
- International jury evaluates ground-breaking design products
- V-type crane utilises principle found in bone structure
The Demag V-type crane is one of the products nominated in the Industry category of the German Design Award 2016. This marks the crane’s chance to win its third leading international design prize. Only the best products, manufacturers and designers are allowed to take part in the German Design Award competition. The prize is awarded every year by the German Design Council, which is a foundation that was initiated by the German Federal Parliament. Today, the foundation has 200 members, including designers, corporations, associations and institutions, who are committed to design. The international panel of experts consists of representatives from the fields of industry, science and design. They evaluate the nominated products according to a variety of criteria, such as functionality, design quality and sustainability.
The Demag V-type crane was already one of this year’s winners of the “iF Design Award 2015” and the “Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015”. It also won the “Best of INDUSTRIEPREIS 2015” award. The jury members paid tribute to the innovative crane design, which is based on bionic principles. In a similar way to bone structure, the design only utilises material where it is needed. The V-type profile consisting of vertical struts and tapered diaphragm joints cuts the crane’s deadweight by an average of 17 per cent and, at the same time, doubles its service life to more than 500,000 changes of load. Its oscillation amplitude, which is reduced by 30 per cent, also enables loads to be positioned more quickly and precisely.
